Architecting Resilient Data Center Networks to Meet AI Demands

Siemon Logo

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads are reshaping the digital infrastructure landscape, driving demand for faster, more scalable and more resilient data center networks. Traditional architectures are no longer sufficient to support modern requirements. A dual‑network design, optimized for both general‑purpose computing and high‑performance computing (HPC), helps meet ai data center networking demands like training, inference and large‑scale data movement, with verified performance and future‑ready scalability.

Bridging the AI Divide with Dual-Network Architecture

Modern data centers increasingly rely on two distinct but interconnected networks:

Front-End Network
This is a general-purpose infrastructure supporting central processing unit (CPU) servers, storage and north-south traffic. Typical designs use spine-leaf cabling topologies with 200/400G Ethernet switch-to-switch links and 25/50/100G switch-to-server connections.

Back-End Network
Purpose-built for AI and HPC workloads, this closed spine-leaf topology facilitates east-west traffic across graphic processing unit (GPU) clusters. These environments demand ultra-high-speed interconnects, such as 800G Ethernet and InfiniBand™, and are preparing for 1.6T technologies.

Trusted partner solutions seamlessly integrate these networks, whether deployed in edge AI racks, experimental pods or hyperscale environments.

Optimizing Interconnection Performance

High-performance interconnection spans four critical areas of AI data center networking:

Front-End Switch-to-Switch
Direct attach copper (DAC), active optical cables (AOC) and BASE-8 MTP cabling support 200G and 400G Ethernet links. Breakout configurations (e.g., 2x200G, 4x100G) enhance port utilization and space efficiency.

Front-End Switch-to-Server
LC/MTP jumpers, Cat6/6A small patch cords, DACs and AOCs support 25G, 50G and 100G server links across ToR, MoR and EoR topologies.

Back-End Switch-to-Switch
For HPC environments, 800G Ethernet connectivity using DACs, ACCs/AECs and BASE-8 MTP cabling support both row-to-row and within-row deployments.

Back-End Switch-to-Node
AI pods typically utilize 400G to 800G GPU connections to leaf switches. CPU nodes connect to the front-end network at 100G, with copper links supporting out-of-band management. Connectivity options vary by required length and reach.
