Modern colleges and universities are more than just classrooms and lecture halls; they are dynamic hubs of collaborative learning, research and innovation. Functioning as community gathering places, these environments must address sophisticated security challenges – ranging from active shooter scenarios to organized demonstrations to access control and occupancy tracking – in order to remain open and welcoming.
To address these risks, educational facilities need a comprehensive, unified security system that offers enterprise-level protection and integrates with building management and educational software.
Centralized Management of Multiple Systems
Security control centers must monitor real-time data from various systems, including intruder alarms, access control, video surveillance, intercoms, emergency alerts, real-time location tracking and building management tools.
Centralized security software helps manage and prioritize this information efficiently. It also integrates with university IT systems, allowing student data and access permissions to be automatically synced from enrollment software to the security system.
Incident Management – Active Shooter
In an active shooter scenario, the centralized management software invokes a comprehensive set of door lockdown features that can assist in containing threats to specific areas. Lockdowns can be triggered from controls within the software itself, hardwired controls or other software systems. Groups of doors that are placed in lockdown will only be accessible by a special class of users such as first responders and security guards.
With integrations to gunfire identification analytics engines, students, staff and visitors can be automatically and instantly notified of the threat long before the incident is reported by staff or students. Mass notification systems form a critical part of the overall management of the incident response plan.
Localized Duress and Welfare Checks
Duress alarms can be raised from on-site help stations, university smart phone apps or security guards equipped with mobile duress systems. When a duress alarm is raised, guards, staff and other stakeholders can be immediately notified through a messaging application to broadcast texts and emails. Integrating video surveillance can also provide control rooms with immediate access to live and recorded video associated with the duress alarm displayed on a schematic map that shows the exact location of the incident. With this localization, guard and welfare check programs can provide a rigid process around student safety within on-site accommodations ensuring the safety and welfare of all on-site.
Identity Checks for Examinations
Innovative mobile reader applications can confirm students’ identities at exam entry points. This allows university administrators to ensure that the photograph on the student card presented at the exam entrance is that of the individual taking the exam.
Managing Access
One of the key responsibilities of campus security systems is to ensure that only authorized staff and students are permitted in restricted areas while safeguarding common areas, and without restricting free access to public spaces.
Access credentials can be integrated into a university’s own smart phone app and timetable management systems so students can only access certain area and rooms only when they have a scheduled class. Student residence halls, which often use a dedicated wireless access control system, can also be fully administered from the management software through integrations with wireless access control systems.
